Bronica ETRS, a medium format film camera that has captured the hearts of photographers seeking versatility, image quality, and modular design. The ETRS, released in 1976, is part of the Bronica ETR series—a family of cameras that pushed the boundaries of medium format photography. So, let's dive into the details:
Bronica ETRS: A Detailed Overview
Format and Size:
- The Bronica ETRS shoots in the 4.5x6 cm format, which provides a larger negative than standard 35mm film.
- The frame size is approximately 42.5mm x 55.1mm, offering ample detail and tonal range.
- This format closely matches standard paper and reproduction sizes, making it versatile for various applications.
Modular Design:
- The ETRS features a modular construction, allowing photographers to customize their camera setup.
- Key components include:
- Body: The cubic box-like body houses the mirror and film transport mechanisms.
- Lens Mount: The interchangeable lens mount accepts various Bronica ETR lenses.
- Film Backs: The ETRS uses interchangeable film backs that hold either 120 or 220 film (15 or 30 exposures, respectively).
- Viewfinders: Various viewfinders (waist-level, prism, etc.) provide different shooting experiences.
Leaf Shutter System:
- The ETRS uses a Seiko-manufactured electronic leaf shutter.
- Shutter speeds range from 8 seconds to 1/500 second, with a mechanical setting available at 1/500 second.
- Flash sync is available at all speeds due to the leaf shutter design.
Film Loading and Advance:
- Film loading is straightforward: insert the film spool into the interchangeable back, thread the film, and attach the dark slide.
- After firing the shutter, rotating the film advance lever resets the mirror, advances the film, and cocks the shutter.
- The ETRS incorporates some dark slide features from previous models, allowing easy removal when the back is detached.
Back Detachment and Dark Slide:
- Unlike older Bronica models, the dark slide can still be removed from the film holder even when the back is detached.
- The shutter cannot be cocked without film, but multi-exposure mode can test fire the shutter.
- The lens cannot be attached or removed without cocking the shutter.
TTL Flash Metering (ETRSi):
- The later ETRSi model introduced TTL flash metering with OTF (Off-The-Film) flash exposure.
- This feature ensures accurate flash exposure by measuring light reflected off the film during exposure.
Lens System:
- The ETRS lenses cover a range of focal lengths, from wide-angle to telephoto.
- Bronica designed and produced their own optics, allowing them to maintain quality after losing Nikon as a partner.
- The lenses offer sharpness, beautiful bokeh, and accurate color rendition.
Photography Applications:
- Portrait Photography: The ETRS delivers flattering, high-resolution images suitable for portraits.
- Studio Work: Its modular design makes it ideal for controlled studio lighting setups.
- Landscape and Fine Art: The large negative size captures intricate details and tonal gradations.
Legacy and Artistic Expression:
- The Bronica ETRS remains a beloved choice for film enthusiasts and artists.
- Its robust build, interchangeable system, and leaf shutter design invite deliberate craftsmanship.
- Whether you're shooting in the studio or exploring the outdoors, the ETRS encourages thoughtful composition and creativity.
In summary, the Bronica ETRS is more than a camera—it's a canvas for photographic expression. Whether you're a seasoned professional or an aspiring artist, this medium format marvel awaits your vision.
